WA Miss Mirabell
1997-2005
Wintersteen Arabians mourns the
loss of WA Miss Mirabell...

WA Miss Mirabell (Elegant
SA x Melissa SA/ Bandit SA)
Nov. 24,
2005
Wintersteen Arabians is deeply saddened at the loss of WA Miss Mirabell
on Thanksgiving Day. Mirabell suffered from symptoms of colic on
Wednesday evening and was rushed to Littleton Large Animal Clinic. It
was a long and difficult night, though at 2 am she seemed to be
improving. Her conditioned then deteriorated. Mirabell had undergone
colic surgery in the spring, which left on lesions on her colon, making
her a poor candidate for a second surgery. She progressively worsened
throughout the morning and was humanely put down on Thanksgiving
afternoon.
WA
Miss was foaled in 1997 along with WA Pejczyk
in what is considered one of the best years for the farm. Arguably
Mirabell is the greatest success of the farm’s breeding program since
she was the product of a somewhat obscure, though exceptional pedigree,
being the daughter of the exotic *Aladdinn son
Elegant SA. Though little used,
Elegant is full brother to National Champion Mare of Qatar Enchanted
Evning. Mirabell’s second dam was the Canadian TT Mare in Halter and
English Pleasure, Mustamagic – dam of our foundation mare and Mirabell’s
dam, Melissa SA.
Mirabell was a supremely typey Kuhailan mare of extraordinary feminine
beauty with well-shaped neck and exquisite dry and compact head.
Standing only 14.2, the diminutive Mirabell was a constant reminder of
what can come in small packages. Friend and mentor Tomasz Skotnicki of
Magness Arabians Farms commented once, “she proves Arabians don’t need
to be big to be great.” Though little, she was substantial bodied, wide
across the chest, with a superbly smooth and balanced body and blessed
with four perfect limbs and feet. She was as captivating in the stall
as out, with a natural carriage and presence that never went unnoticed.
Like most great mares, she instinctively understood her lofty station in
life and demanded to be handled with the utmost respect and kindness she
was due.
Obviously with such attributes, Mirabell was a natural for the show
ring, but it was something she never relished. A difficult mare to
show, she absolutely refused anything but the gentlest handling.
Expertly shown her entire career by David Lowe – the duo accounted for
11 class wins and championships, the highlight when she was named
Colorado Futurity Champion Filly in 2000.
We were understandably anxious to have her in the breeding barn,
particularly with some rather exciting stallions coming from Poland.
Despite the farm acquiring some mares of flashier pedigrees, Mirabell
made it abundantly clear that she would be a crucial part of the farm’s
future breeding success. Though her breeding career was sadly cut
short, it was remarkable in the two foals left behind – without question
some of the best foals ever born on the farm. The initial, champion
filly WA Miraczyk, was the first second
generation Wintersteen Arabian foal and will remain carry on Mirabell’s
legacy for the farm. The Pejczyk daughter’s quality and type was in
large part responsible for Pejczyk attracting some excellent mares the
following spring allowing him to prove himself as a sire. To Pejczyk’s
credit, he voiced his opinion daily that Mirabell was his absolute
favorite mare on the farm. Mirabell’s second foal by *Ganges,
WA Maksimum, stands as an unconditional
testament to her abilities as a broodmare. She was scheduled to be bred
to World Champion sire *Gazal Al Shaqab in the spring.
Thanksgiving evening, the family brought Mirabell’s body home and she
has been laid to rest in the only pastures she ever knew. WA Miss
Mirabell would have been a valued member in any broodmare band, but for
small breeders like ourselves -- she was irreplaceable. Mirabell will
always be regarded as one of our most treasured mares, and she leaves a
hole in our hearts that time will not easily heal.
US Nationals Report in Albuquerque,
New Mexico!

*Ecaho during Senior
Stallion Finals
Oct. 21,
2005
The Wintersteen's attended the first big
weekend of US Nationals, deciding to cheer on the Polish entrants in senior
mares and stallions. The Michałów mares were spectacular as usual,
though *Egzonera did not show that well. *Fallada was exceptional and
we we excited to see her again, the first time outside of Poland. She
has dried out tremendously and certainly rivals Kwestura in our opinion as
one of Poland's finest of the Monogramm daughters. We was certainly
our choice for senior mare title, but the judges chose differently, instead
opting for JJ La Estrella.
The stallion class was one of the best in
years with *Ecaho (shown by owner Jim Ferlita who got a resounding
applause!) and *Esperanto (Eukaliptus x Esperanca/ Set) representing Polish
interest and *Almir (*Alt x Espmira) of all Polish bloodlines. Others
that were highlights were World Champion *Gazal al Shaqab who bred mares at
all three studs in Poland and the trotty Navajo Moun (Afire Bey V x
Mounlighting). The eventual winner Padrons Psyche son Enzo who had a
strong following, and certainly an "American" type halter horse. *Gazal
was able to finish reserve and *Ecaho making into the top ten of this hotly
contested class.
In other news we saw *Gazal in the stall,
having only seen his get up close in Poland to this point. Needless to
say we were impressed, not only with his performance in the ring but being
able to "lay hands" on him and we are looking forward to adding his
bloodlines to our herd. WA Miss Mirabell is currently on the short
list since she is proving herself an outstanding producer. We also saw
the young *Emanor son WH Araby courtesy of George Z. He is an absolute
standout and will make some noise on behalf of his sire. Looking
forward to a bright future for this high trotting and very necky gray --
also great legs with fantastic short cannons!

Tisa Meisel accepts the "Diane
Alderson Memorial Trophy" for Wintersteen bred WA Elegancja.
Sept 2,
2005
Wintersteen horses did very well at the
CAHC fall show. The Pejczyk foals, in
particular, won a number of classes and championships. Most notable in
proving his ability at siring fillies, Pejczyk daughters went 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the large
(nine entries) Colorado
Futurity/ Breeders Cup class. Of particular note is the race bred WA
Borkata, Pejczyk daughter and out of Janów Podlaski's
*Boruta, who won Reserve Champion in her first show. We are also very proud that a Pejczyk
filly and Wintersteen bred WA Elegancja was presented with the
Diane Alderson Trophy for the best yearling filly. The highlights
are as follows:
WA Maksimum -
2nd Colorado Futurity Weanling Colts, 2nd Open Weanling Colts
WA Elegancja
- 1st Colorado Futurity Yearling Fillies, Champion Colorado Breeders Cup
Yearling Fillies, Diane Alderson Trophy
WA Borkata -

Brilliance Sets Sizzling Fractions
for 5 Furlongs!
|
July
16,
2005
Brilliance SF set sizzling fractions
until deep stretch, leading a strong group of filly and mares on July 16 at
Arapahoe Park. Her fractions were 24.0 and 50.1 for the quarter and
half respectively, she had a 5 length lead by the quarter pole. The *Pepton
daughter was not caught till deep stretch, the winning filly LA Zell posting
the fastest time for mares and second fastest 6 furlongs for the meet.
"We are just having a little bit of a
problem getting her to relax, she just takes it too them right from the
break," states trainer and owner Jeff Wintersteen. "Obviously 24.0 for
the quarter is just way too fast, had she been able to back off that and get
25 and change, we probably could have come home a winner. I have no
doubt that she is a special filly, her natural speed and desire is just awesome."
Jockey Chris Conway couldn't agree more,
"she did that all on her own. I didn't want to fight with her, her
mind was made up and she was gone when that gate opened." Wintersteen
is undecided on her next start.

WA Pejczyk
daughter, Sugar nd Spice adds yet another winner to
the growing list for Pejczyk and scores the first Class A Championship of
her sire's get. Shown by Caroline Scott and out of MHR Sweet Dreams (*Elimar x Princess Bask/
*Bask), the well built Kuhailan beauty bested the Region VIII Reserve
Champion Yearling Filly, Mystical Lady by FS Bengali. "This is a very
satisfying win, not only for Pejczyk, but also for Ann [Carvahlo] who owns
the filly, along with Alan, Judy and Kelley Harding who recently purchased
her dam, re-breeding her to Pejczyk.

Also shown was the recently gelded
Allyshah by Pejczyk and out of the imported
Brazilian mare *Allysia HCF. The 14.2 hand yearling, also owned by Ann
Carvahlo, won the yearling colt/ gelding class. The most decorated of the
Pejczyk foals, Allyshah has yet to lose in his age group and we are very
excited about his prospects under saddle. The
Harding's also purchased Allyshah's dam and she recently foaled
Allyczyk, a full
sibling to Allyshah. Congratulations to the connections!
WA Miss Emaranta Fastest Work
of Day in 2nd Official Work!
June 30,
2005

Emaranta leaves the track
after a work, Jeff Wintersteen up.
*Emanor daughter,
WA Miss Emaranta (out of Melissa SA) took a very
important step towards making her first start on the race track today. She
worked 3 furlongs under exercise rider Samantha Hawkins in 40.2 seconds,
equaling the fastest work of the day for Arabians. She will be the first
*Emanor foal to start on a track in the US. She is dappled gray and
impressively bodied like her sire, with a sweet and willing disposition. She
is out of a Mustamagic (Canadian Top Ten Mare) daughter and by Bandit SA,
one of the last *Bandos sons. Emaranta's first work was 3 furlongs in 42.0
ten days earlier with her trainer Jeff Wintersteen up. She continues to show
improvement and hopefully will make her first start by the end of the month.
She still needs some fitness and gate approval, but has been out of the farm
gates rather well.
Brilliance Readies for 2005 Summer
Race Season!
May 28,
2005

Brilliance stretches her legs in an early
morning gallop, Jeff in the irons.
Brilliance SF
is getting ready for the summer race season, already with one official work
under her belt. "She is doing very well, pretty aggressive in the
morning. I expect her to be very competitive here in Colorado," states
her trainer Jeff Wintersteen. Brilliance's last race was December at
Sam Houston Race Park in Texas. Her first race is expected to be the
second weekend in June.
Allyshah Continues Winning Streak
in 2005 Debut!
May 27,
2005

WA Pejczyk's
most successful show colt, continued his winning ways on Friday, winning the
2 Years and Younger Geldings in Hand at the Larimer County Class A Show.
Having had to sit out the CAHC Spring Show because of quarantine due to
sickness of a stablemate, Allyshah picked up
where he left off last season and has yet to lose in his age group.
Bred by Dewayne Davis and owned by Anne Carvahlo, he is out of the imported
Brazilian mare, *Allysia HCF. Allyshah was shown to the win by
Caroline Scott. Congratulations to all of the connections!
*Allysia HCF Foals 2nd Pejczyk Colt!
May 18,
2005

Allysia with her latest foal by
Pejczyk |
WA Pejczyk's
second colt of the season was foaled last week out of Brazilian import *Allysia HCF.
Allyczyk (pending) is owned and bred by Alan and Judy Harding, and the colt
demonstrates a ton of potential and is full sibling to
Allyshah, currently undefeated in his age group
in the show ring. "Allyczyk is getting prettier and prettier every minute and we
are very happy with him. He is an absolute sweet heart and always comes when
we talk to him", reports daughter Kelly Harding.
Congratulations to the Hardings, we look
forward to seeing this foal in the show ring in the future. Allyczyk
is Colorado Futurity, Colorado Breeders Cup, COBRA and Sweepstakes
nominated.

Estansia Foals Colt by Polish
National Champion *Ecaho!
|
April 4,
2005
Halter Champion and daughter of highly
esteemed *Erwina -- Estansia
foaled an exotic, well balanced gray colt at 11:30 pm by Polish National
Champion and World Champion Sire *Ecaho. It
is certainly a world class pedigree and every indication is that it will be
a world class colt.
Tentatively named WA Emfatyk, it is probably the most typey foal ever born
at Wintersteen Arabians. He has a well set neck, incredibly dished
head, wide across the forehead and wonderful typey ears. He has
excellent legs, short back and long croup with deep hip. We have the highest expectations for him and
his future.
The foal is Scottsdale Signature, Breeders Sweepstakes,
Colorado Futurity, and COBRA nominated. Estansia will be re-bred to *Ecaho
this spring. Check back for more pics!

Pejczyk's First Foal of 2005
Arrives!
March 23,
2005

WA Pejczyk's
first foal of the season hit the ground at 5:30 am on March 23 for breeders
and owners Jim and Cindy Gromelski of GF Force Arabians. The 110 lb. bay
colt is out of LL Jealousy (Lamolin x Bluespruce Desire/ WK Russian Heir) -
Region VIII Champion Sweepstakes Yearling Filly, and numerous performance
Champion in Hunter and Western Pleasure. "We are really excited about this
foal," states Cindy. "Already he is up and galloping around after just a
couple hours. I knew we would get the body, but his neck set is just
tremendous." Adds Jim, "We have never had such a large hip on the farm." As
they have bred numerous halter champions and Scottsdale Champion and
National Top Ten in Open Reining, that is saying something!
"We are very excited for the Gromelski's,"
states Jeff Wintersteen. "They had a plan and a vision for this foal and put
a lot of faith in Pejczyk - we are very pleased that Pejczyk delivered for
them. This could be a very special one". It is also a new pedigree for
Pejczyk. "Pejczyk's foals to date have been predominately out of Polish
mares, this foal is an outcross and we are extremely pleased with the
results, he continues to stamp the balance, structure, and neck set of his
previous foals! More out crosses are on the way, it is a good omen for
them."
While the showy foal is Sweepstakes, Colorado
Futurity, Colorado Breeders Cup nominated, Cindy makes no bones about what
they want for his future. "He will be named GF Jet Stream, he looks all
power and we really want to see this colt on the track!"
WA Miss Mirabell's *Ganges Foal
Arrives!

March. 20,
2005
The first foal of the
season has arrived at Wintersteen Arabians, the long awaited foal from
Colorado Futurity Champion Filly, WA Miss
Mirabell. The bay colt is by the Polish National and US
Reserve Champion Stallion *Ganges, who was on
lease to the United States and since has returned to his native Poland.
The bay colt, named WA Maksimum, is an excellent example of the two
parents and we have the highest expectations for him and anxious to see
how he develops.
